5 Days, 5 Leagues: NEUAL [28/Mar/14]

Usually editorial articles on the this website are allowed to mellow like a fine wine for at least a few days, revelling in the tag of Latest Article, before making their way in to the archives. However, because there are a lot of regional league results to review (including three leagues extracting scores from Telford), this week will see one article per day, focussing on each league in turn.

Friday - NEUAL

After match 3 Seniors: Liverpool 45, York and Bradford 44, Lancaster and Keele 43. Novices (inc Novice Champs): Liverpool 59, Huddersfield and Bradford 57, Sheffield 56. There were several corrections to earlier scores and results, which mean the league table may not have looked like this at the time.

Confusingly, NEUAL's 5th set of fixtures actually happened before the 4th set. The 4th set were extracted from BUCS, whilst the Indoor Champs happened a week later in Durham. This article tells its tall chronologically.

Liverpool, Lancaster and York enjoyed wins in this 5th set of fixtures. Liverpool's 2149 was the highest score, with Lancaster on 2119 and York on 2104. Lancaster's match was the closest, with Sheffield on 2094 and Durham on 2089. Bradford scored 2082 for second place to Liverpool. Mike Smith (Sheffield) posted the highest score of the NEUAL season, 1 point short of 580, whilst Matt McCormack (Lancaster), Jonathan Edgar (Durham), Bilal Saloo (Leeds) all made contributions in the 560s. Bradford pipped Liverpool in a novice fixture, the pair either side of 1500. Huddersfield were third in this match with a 1400, whilst Sheffield won their match with 1436 ahead of Lancaster. Sunderland won the other match on 1214. Alex Barnsley (Liverpool) was top novice with 531.

After matches 1-3,5 Seniors: Liverpool 60 points, York 59, Lancaster and Bradford 58, Sheffield and Keele 56. Novices matches 1-3,5,NC: Liverpool 73 points, Bradford 72, Sheffield 71, Huddersfield 70.

BUCS saw NEUAL match wins for Durham, York, Lancaster and Sheffield. Sheffield hit the first 2200 of the NEUAL season with 2216, with league leaders Liverpool second in the match on 2133. The dropped point meant that York went level on points in the table as they won their match with 2156. Lancaster's winning total was 2124. The closest match was Durham who got 2119 against 2116 from Keele. Sheffield duo Stuart Archer and Mike Smith were top scorers in the match, both getting 562. The novice match wins went to Durham, Huddersfield, Lancaster and Liverpool. Huddersfield top scored overall with 1501, with Liverpool's 1492 beating Sheffield's 1425. Durham and Lancaster won with high 1300s scores, Zhe Wang (Durham) on 539.

After matches 1-5 Seniors: Liverpool and York 74 points, Lancaster 73, Bradford 72, Sheffield 71. Novices matches 1-5,NC: Liverpool 88, Bradford 86, Huddersfield and Sheffield 85.

NEUAL matches only have 3 or 4 teams involved with 15, 14, 13 (& 12) points available. This means that a good (or a bad) performance in the NEUAL Indoor Champs, when all 12 teams compete, can make a big points difference. Liverpool and York were tied in the lead, but Lancaster were only a point behind albeit with a lower aggregate. Liverpool have never been NEUAL champions - York have won 4 times, but not since 2006. Even Bradford and Sheffield were still in with a shout if results went their way.

Liverpool were ultimately the winner of NEUAL 2013/14. They scored 2186 to finish second at NEUAL Indoors ahead of York, who were third on 2177, by a mere 9 points. Sheffield won on the day with 2233, leapfrogging Bradford and Lancaster in the process. Durham were fourth on 2161, with Lancaster fifth on 2100 exactly. The pair finished the other way around in the final table. Stuart Archer (Sheffield) top scored with 572, with Daniel Simmons (Sunderland) and Mike Smith (Sheffield) the other gents over 560. In the novice equivalent, Liverpool made it a league double, with 1472 securing third place and the title overall. Huddersfield won on the day with 1493 to finish second overall. Durham were second with 1474. Alex Barnsley (Liverpool) was top novice with 535, 1 ahead of Zhe Wang (Durham) and Nick Fletcher (York).

Final NEUAL standings Seniors: Liverpool 88 points, York 87, Sheffield 86, Lancaster 84. Novices: Liverpool 101 points, Huddersfield 100, Bradford 97, Sheffield 95.

For the full standings, see the NEUAL 2013/14 page. In addition to the 12 teams that already make NEUAL the largest of the regional leagues, two more sides will join in 2014/15, Teesside and Newcastle. The NEUAL authorities are currently looking at possible restructure to accommodate such an expansion.
