The BUTTS league kicked off with a thriller at Nottingham. Cambridge were the eventual winners on 2213, but had Warwick and Oxford for company all the way, Warwick on 2204, and Oxford only 1 point behind. Further north, there were straightforward NEUAL wins for Durham and York. The Oxford BUTTS leg and Bradford home NEUAL match have been postponed.
Top individual scorers at the first BUTTS leg of the season were Rob Bacon (Cambridge) and David Longworth (Oxford) with 562 each. Richard Proctor (Warwick) shot 560. The leading three unis were separated by only 10 points - one arrow if you will - and, more significantly, all three posted scores over 2200 very early in the season, suggesting a high-scoring and extremely close battle for BUTTS honours this season.
The novice leg was a one-sided affair as Cambridge produced a score of 1969, team led by David Bebb's 514 and Ivan Hoo's 506 [corr.]. Jack Bryant was the other novice to break 500 with 502 for Birmingham, who trailed 200 points behind the Light Blues in second place.
In NEUAL, Durham beat Leeds (and a no-show Sheffield Hallam) and York beat Lancaster (second) and Bradford (third). Durham's Pete Clayton shot the highest score of the uni season so far with 574, but York's Dave Cox was not far behind with 570. The novice matches were won by Leeds and York respectively. With all the NEUAL teams having played one match, York lead the senior table on aggregate from Keele and Durham, the trio all on three points. Keele lead the novice table.
