Selection Shenzhanigans continues [15/Sep/10]

For some background on this story, read the previous editorial Selection Shenzhanigans.

The World University Archery Championships, in Shenzhen in China are now looming, however, since the last editorial, BUCS have announced a new team line up. The three gents compounds were referred to on this site as having their names in ink. Well, time to get the tippex out, because only Phil Glover (Loughborough) now remains from that trio. Tapani Kalmaru (UWI Cardiff) is in Dehli shooting compound for Wales at the Commonwealth Games, but the cost to get from India to China directly (instead of home with the Welsh squad) has now increased substantially. Matt Arnold (Nottingham Trent) saw his university fail to fund the personal contribution of his place on the team, so both men have dropped out.

Glover is instead joined by recurves Andrew Callaway (Bournemouth), Craig Bowley and Glen Croft (both Birmingham City) though Bowley is listed as Birmingham by BUCS. Andrew Callaway will win a record breaking 5th cap for the British student team, whilst Phil Glover makes his second appearance.

The withdrawals meant potential savings for BUCS, which opened the door for Team Manager John Sullivan to possibly attend. Sullivan asked for the saving to help fund the archers instead, but by booking the flights so late, it appears that no net saving has been made.

The Internationals section has been updated to reflect the latest updates to the 2010 squad, although it is worth noting that this is subject to any further last minute changes.

BUCS' delays had introduced an astonishing pay-as-you-play element in to proceedings, so if you weren't selected, but fancy a shot, then don't worry. Just turn up to the airport with a bowcase full of unmarked bills and see what happens.
