The Discs go to Derby [02/Nov/15]

In 2016 students will follow the yellow disc road to Derby. BUTC 2016's date is confirmed as Saturday 5th March.

Derby are a relatively new club in BUTC terms, having attended the last three events. Unquestionably their best run in the competition came in 2014. Having qualified in second place, they breezed past Queen Mary (R of 32) and then hit 17 discs to dispose of Napier (R of 16). In the quarter finals, a perfect 4th end blew away Southampton B's challenge. Derby lost their semi-final against Warwick, but bounced back to beat Loughborough in the bronze medal match. In doing so, Tom Currall, Shaun Rhodes and Bilaal Mohammad won Derby's first national student senior team medals.

2016 will be the 14th edition of BUTC, the 12th using Beiter hit-miss discs and the 10th using the current format, i.e. teams of 3 shooting 4 ends of 2 arrows at 60mm discs format. Derby is the 10th different city/town to host the championships. BUTTS clubs have hosted 5 times.

In 2015, Warwick won the Werner Beiter trophy for the first time, getting the better of 2012 champions Loughborough. Oxford broke the records for Bray I qualifying (826), number of discs in a single match (20) and number of discs in a tournament (87). It only took one very slight dip in performance in the semi-finals to see the two time defending champions dethroned. Last year also a particularly epic fixture between Nottingham and Birmingham, the QF pair requiring 4 shoot offs to be separated.

Oxford's run of 12 matches (5+4*+3) from 2013 to 2015 is only bettered by Edinburgh's 16 match winning run (5+4*+5+2) from 2006 to 2009. Usually it takes 5 matches to win the trophy, the 4* indicates a first round bye. No other teams have ever defended the trophy.

The 2016 entry form and tournament information pack will be published in the BUTC Tournament Info page in due course. Remember that you can buy BUTC style target faces and the foam and discs from the Clickers website.
