SWWU lead changes hands - again [14/Mar/24]

Results from SWWU matches 6 and 7 have been published. Bath won both fixtures, with Bristol second in both. Novice results were the other way round. Match 6 was extracted from BUCS Qualifying, whilst match 7 doubled as the SWWU Indoor Champs. Results for the TOUCAN Indoor Championships have also been published, with Oxford winning comfortably and taking the overall TOUCAN title as a result. A review of that will follow tomorrow.

Match 6 saw Bath score 2200 to Bristol's 2192, with Exeter third on 2131. This moved Bath and Bristol onto 56 with very similar aggregates. Exeter were third on 48. Bristol won the novice match with (team of 4) score of 1911. Bath were second on 1841, with Exeter on 1779. This put Bristol on 49 league points. Bath moved clear on Exeter and Cardiff on 42. Plymouth narrowly won the compound match from Swansea (1114 v 1107), with Bath third. Swansea stretched their overall lead to 7 points over Exeter.

Match 7 was the SWWU Indoor Champs, hosted by Exeter on 9th Mar. The round used was a Bray I, followed by individual head to heads, a format not wildly dissimilar to BUTC, for which the entry form is now available.

Bath ran out quite comfortable winners, with a Bray I team of 4 total of 1022. Bristol were chased by Exeter for second, but held on with 871 against 862. Top individuals in the match were Dan Clarke (Bath) and Thomas McCarthy (Cardiff) on 264 and 263. In the head to heads, 3rd seed Louis Huygens (Bath) beat teammate Clarke in the gents recurve final 6-5. Chloe Sagun (Bath) beat Paula Ionita (Exeter) in ladies recurve final. Full results here are available on ianseo/linked from the SWWU website.

In the novice event, league leaders Bristol's greater strength in depth saw them record a fairly comfortable win. Their novice Bray I team of 4 total was 755, with Bath second on 651 and Exeter third on 608. Kyumin Lee (Bath) was top novice by a distance, with 244. Bristol increased their novice table lead to 8 league points. They have 59, with Bath on 51 and Exeter on 48. Exeter won the compound match and with league leaders Swansea absent, they jump to the top of the compound table. Exeter have 56 to Swansea's 53. Cardiff have 50.

Updated tables are on SWWU 2023/24 page.

In terms of the SWWU season, there are slated to be nine matches. At 7 matches long, SWWU was already the regional league with the most matches. Leg 8 will be a WA900 in Swansea on 4th May. Leg 9 will be a WA720 & H2H in Bristol on 19th May. [corr.]

If Bath hold on to win, it will be their first senior SWWU title since 2015. They would also become the first English club to win 10 senior regional titles. Bath and Warwick are currently sitting on 9. Cambridge have 8, a figure that Imperial could match if they defend a 2 point league lead in the final SEAL match.
