Sheffield, Strathclyde make winning start [31/Oct/23]

Held on 28th October, results from SSS match 1 have been published. Strathclyde picked up maximum points, racking up a team total 5 points shy of 2200 - and enough for a winning margin of 51 points. Defending SSS champions Dundee were second on 2144, a little ahead of Edinburgh in third on 2116. There was quite a big drop down to the remaining teams, with St Andrews in fourth place on 1905, a little over 200 behind the leading group, but still 41 ahead of fifth placed UWS.

Alex Lai (Dundee) was top scorer in the match with 574. Grant McLellan (Strathclyde) helped steer his side to top spot with 563. Strathclyde produced their first SSS match win since January 2019. Third place in a SSS match is also Edinburgh's best placing post-Covid.

Elsewhere in the match, Stirling made their long awaited SSS league debut - 8 months after having hosted a BUCS Indoor Northern Qualifier. Fern Blundell was their top scorer - and in fact their only senior archer - with 511 out of a team total of 1429. This was enough for Stirling to take 8th place out of 10 in the match, with Stirling's novices 7th overall.

See SSS 2023/24 page for results and tables.

SSS match 1 wasn't actually the first piece of regional action, with Sheffield hosting NUTC the weekend before. Hosts Sheffield dominated the event. Their A and B teams qualified first and second, and went on to meet in the final. Sheffield B (seeded 2nd) actually beat Sheffield A (seeded 1st) in the final. York A (seeded 5th) beat Leeds A (seeded 3rd) in the bronze match. The defeated quarter-finalists were Leeds B and the A teams of Huddersfield, UCLan and Liverpool.

SSS resumes on the weekend of 11th November, with Aberdeen and St Andrew hosting match 2. The remainder of NEUAL match 1 takes place the weekend after at UCLan, York and Chester.
