Surrey pip UEA to SEAL 1 [22/Nov/23]

Full results from SEAL match 1, held over the weekend of the 18th and 19th November, have been published. The overall match result went right down to the wire. Two points was the gap between first and second as Surrey posted 2154 to finish just a couple of linecutters ahead of East Anglia's 2152. Imperial were third on 2117 - themselves only 37 off top spot. Sussex scored 2051 in fourth - that's their best placing at a SEAL match since March 2019. Anglia Ruskin squeezed ahead of Southampton, with both clubs just breaking 2000, on 2014 and 2007.

In a finely balanced match, the top individuals in the match paralleled their team's overall performance. Imogen Newby (Surrey) scored 568, with Kit-Lun Tong (UEA) on 564. In fact, Surrey and UEA had very similar scores all the way down: 568/564, 557/556, 533/534 and 496/498. Last season Surrey won the overall SEAL title, with East Anglia second. The season before it was the other way round.

The novice match was also close, with 13 points covering the (virtual) podium. Brunel took first on 1194, with Portsmouth on 1183 and Surrey on 1181. Despite a number of second places, this match is the first time that Brunel have won a novice SEAL match outright since the all vs all format was introduced in SEAL in 2011/12.

Updated SEAL tables can be seen on the SEAL 2023/24 page. SEAL match 2 takes place over the weekend of the 2nd and 3rd of December.

The weekend of 18th/19th November also saw the conclusion of NEUAL match 1, with matches at UCLan, York and Chester. No results have been published yet. Also held were the starts of SSS match 3 and TOUCAN match 1 and UWS and Loughborough respectively.

Elsewhere, E-League Round 1 results were published. More on those later.
